In 2022, James and Breezy McLay embarked on a mission to restore the building's former glory, transforming it from a once-proud pharmacy into a stunning venue for weddings and special events. With Dondria McGuire, Breezy's mother, at the helm since January 2023, Bates Social Event Space offers a unique blend of affordability and elegance. The exposed brick walls and industrial charm create a warm and intimate atmosphere, perfect for celebrating life's most special moments. A Little About Our Venue History
Nestled on the iconic Butler Square, our venue offers a unique blend of history and modernity, providing the perfect setting for your special events.
Our building has a storied past, once well-known as the Butler Pharmacy. Butler itself is rich in history for any of our history loving guests. During the Civil War, the city was completely burnt down in 1863 by the infamous Order No. 11 and had to be entirely rebuilt. Known as the Electric City, Butler is proud to be the first city not only in Missouri but also anywhere west of the Mississippi River, to have electric power, with lights first illuminating the town on December 6, 1881. This makes Butler home to the oldest continuously operated municipal electric utility in the United States.
Located just 65 miles south of Kansas City, our venue is part of a historic square that still boasts original brick streets. Visitors can enjoy a walking tour of the square and explore many nearby historic homes. While our venue has been updated and modernized, it still retains the charm of its original structure and bricks, reflecting the timeless beauty of Butler's past.
